GUEST ROOM | An Open Invitation to Jewish College students

We write as members of Jewish Voice for Peace at Cornell. We’re a bunch of scholars from totally different Jewish backgrounds, faiths and experiences who imagine that above all, our Judaism implores us to face up for the liberty of all individuals. Our Judaism compels us to acknowledge the continued genocide of Palestinians by the Israeli state and to battle in opposition to the cycles of violence that proceed to trigger mass struggling, displacement and loss of life. We particularly refute the notion that Jews require a militarized theocracy to make sure our security and talent to flourish. We condemn within the strongest phrases the suffocation, occupation and homicide of the Palestinian individuals within the identify of Judaism.

We write this to make it clear that Jews at Cornell, as in all places, should not a monolith. We write this to Jewish Cornellians who might really feel confused, divided or afraid to query Zionism. We perceive as a result of many people grew up in households and congregations that espoused the beliefs of Zionism with out regard to its violent actualization. The method of questioning and unlearning is tough, however it’s important. Questioning our beliefs, our values and our programs is on the very coronary heart of Judaism, as we’re commonly reminded in the course of the Passover celebration we’ll commemorate subsequent month. We write to Jewish college students, urging you to ask questions and provide dissent; There’s a group and a motion for you.

President Biden, amongst others, has acknowledged that Jews wouldn’t be secure with out Israel. We refute this concept within the strongest phrases: we ought to be secure wherever we dwell. Our freedom is just not conditional on a state constructed on oppression and militarism. Jews have liked, struggled, fought and made houses everywhere in the world, lengthy earlier than the notion of Zionism ever existed.  We’re secure within the understanding that none of us are free till all of us are free. We’re secure in our constructed communities, shared traditions and dedication to liberation. Moreover, there’s little proof that Jews dwelling in Israel are safer than Jews elsewhere, as we’re commonly reminded {that a} individuals can’t construct safety on the oppression of others.
